French Canadian sailing group share trip from the US to entry in the Bahamas
André R. Lachapelle on board the S/V Wind Spirit 3 organized a flotilla of French cruisers from Canada to journey to warmer weather this winter. We were honored to be able to recently welcome the group to the Bahamas. Here André shares their experience of entering into the Bahamas from the United States and a few photos from their visit.
As Canadian Sailors, each year hundreds of us escape from our cold winter for the much greater weather of the South – Bahamas and further down. As we approach the State of Florida, one of our main concerns was the passage across the Gulf Stream waters and entrance into the Bahamas.
Sunrise Resort and Marina is one of the few ports that is close to Freeport and Port Lucaya. From Lake Worth, Florida, it is a 10-12 hour passage, depending on the weather and speed of the boat. From the United States, we contacted Sunrise Resort and Marina, referred to us from a friend boater for their secluded, secure harbor and helpful, dedicated staff. We received a very prompt answer through emails and kept contact until our arrival.
We were crossing with 5 other boats, and advised them that we should be there as early as sunrise. The staff came in earlier for our arrival at high tide around 7:00 AM. The dockage was easy and staff was on the docks to help us secure our boats. All of the information for customs and immigration was coordinated. Sunrise even called ahead to the officers so we would waste less time for the paperwork.
We had the opportunity to use the services of the resort’s laundry machine, the shower, the lounge and shoot a game on the pool table. We couldn’t use the nice swimming pool as it was too cold. Our group received answers to all our questions, and hired a minivan cab to go to Freeport and Port Lucaya the next day.
Thanks to Ta’Shar Cuccurullo, the manager of Sunrise Marina and Resort and all her crew, from the reception desk team to everyone on the dock and surrounding the resort.
Thank you André for sharing your experience and for choosing our Grand Bahama marina resort as your point of entry to the Bahamas. It was our pleasure to welcome you and the flotilla of Canadian sailors to Grand Bahama, and hope to welcome you back on your journey south again next year.
