The island of Grand Bahama is surrounded by beautiful beaches and miles of crystal-clear ocean water; making it an ideal location for a number of water activities. From scuba diving, snorkeling, paddle boarding, and fishing, to glass-bottom boat tours, banana boat rides, and parasailing, there is no shortage of activities for you to choose from! You’ll find postcard-perfect beaches here, from secluded Gold Rock Beach to family-friendly Taino Beach, offering soft, sugar-white sand, with plenty of beach bars and restaurants to enjoy. If shopping is your thing, you’ll  love the Port Lucaya Marketplace for local crafts, souvenirs, and exciting live musical entertainment.

The dolphin swim is a popular attraction that will leave a lasting impression, or animal and nature lovers can also check out Garden of the Groves, a wildlife center that transports travelers to a tropical oasis full of birds and other native animals. Several tour operators offer eco-travel adventures including kayaking in Peterson Cay National Park, hiking in Lucayan National Park, or exploring some of the island’s legendary blue holes and caves.

Boasting one of the world’s largest underwater cave systems, Grand Bahama is a dream destination for scuba divers. Combine shopping in Freeport and Lucaya with miles of white-sands beaches that stretch across the shores, natural forests that are prime for bird-lovers and the historic fishing villages of Greater Grand Bahama and you have the perfect recipe for a relaxing vacation. Much of the island’s appeal is the hidden beaches that offer spectacular views and seclusion.

Fresh local fish, conch and other seafood dishes make up the majority of the cuisine on the island, but you’ll find a variety of Mediterranean, Asian, international and American restaurants as well. Much of the dining scene is centered around the Port Lucaya Marketplace, but Freeport has a wide range of of eateries. Be sure to catch the traditional Bahamian Fish Fry on Wednesday evenings at Smith’s Point! A number of restaurants in Freeport are closed on Wednesday evenings, due to the popularity of the Fish Fry.

While Grand Bahama Island is not known for its outrageous night life, that doesn’t mean you’ll have to go to bed early. A number of bars, clubs, and live music venues heat up after the sun goes down to and stay open late into the night. One island tradition that is not to be missed is the Beach Bonfire that features dinner, games, music, dancing, and plenty of tropical drinks. The beach bonfire party begins at 6:00pm on Tuesday, Thursdays and Sundays, with advance reservations available. Around the island, beach and waterfront bars offer a variety of atmospheres, from ultra casual, laid back beach service, to upscale and formal. Many provide live music and open-air dining.

Spread over six acres, Port Lucaya Marketplace is one of the most popular places on the island. Conveniently located on Seahorse Road, this is a fabulous destination for dining and shopping. And with Lucaya Beach accessible behind the hotels across the street, as well as a casino, your group can travel together to take advantage of all of these options! Count Basie Square is located behind the Marketplace,where you’ll find evening entertainment, including live music and dancing.  Additionally, a straw market is located in the Marketplace, where islanders offer local goods and craft items during the day.  A number of retail shops and boutiques are located in the Marketplace, with day and evening hours. Among the varied shops here, you’ll find clothing, jewelry, accessories, home decor, a perfumery, and much more to choose from!
